Don't underestimate the value of a good project. Look what FDR's New Deal did for the US during the Great Depression. Speaking of depression (which is essentially boredom) a project will help stave off boredom and give you something to do. I'm not suggesting that you need to build the Hoover Dam either. Today I took some old timber and made a shelf for some tiki mugs. I framed the thing with bamboo and scorched it with a blowtorch. The wife hates it but what does she know?
