The Drought of 2012

Tom picked me up at 7.30 and we drove down through the rain and the fallen branches to Box Hill. It was quiet in the car and on the roads because it was fuggin horrible out. It had rained every day for at least two weeks and Saturday and Sunday were by far the best days yet for dramatic weather.
We got there and put our wheels on.

We had a bet as to how many cyclists we would see on the first lap as there was a severe weather warning issued by the Met. I said one and Tom said 10. Either way there wouldn't be many. There was one.

Half way around there were actually rivers running down the middle of the road. We survived that and an incident when riding side by side we were almost blown together by a cross wind. Normal stuff. I went to dig out a Trekk bar just after the actual Zig Zag Road climb but eating it was the most difficult thing I did all day.

I didn't dare ride no handed after nearly being clunked together like the Two Stooges. Instead I tried biting the wrapper off while riding one handed. This only came away in little pieces and being conscious about litter it was impossible to police them. I took a glove off with my teeth and then put my elbows on my bar tops. Are Trekk bar wrappers made out of Teflon? This was becoming a joke. I managed to get at the bar after about a mile or so. I stashed the wrapper and took a bite. I went over a bump and it slipped out of my hand and fell into a bottomless puddle. I could only laugh.

We only did a couple of hours in that. We did see some other riders later on mountain bikes and a group that looked like they were on a fun ride. I bet they never ride a bike again.

Today there is glorious sunshine so back to Richmond Park for a few hours.
