Flandrian
The term Flandrian refers to Belgian riders and riding conditions from Flanders. Their love of cycling means that riding, racing and spectating go on no matter what the weather is like. The weather in the UK is pretty similar in fact London is the same latitude and only a few hundred miles away.
This spirit is something to be admired. Mud tracks, snow, sleet, rain, howling winds. Miles achieved in Flandrian conditions are more than just miles. They take me out of a comfort zone. Long distances on a bike are not just about fitness. They are also about fortitude.
When you are out slogging around in the mud and salt while everyone else is riding a bike in the gym, smile, you have become an honorary Flandrian.
